All-Star Western #19 review

Here’s a DC New 52 book that really does deliver a ‘what the …?’ moment with its gatefold cover, as Jonah Hex comes face to face with Booster Gold. I’m just back at All-Star Western after some time away. I’ve always liked Jonah Hex, but his absorption into the Gotham City mythos wore away my […]

Superman #19 review

It’s Surprise Over The Gatefold Month at DC, but the reveal here won’t surprise anyone who read last issue – it’s Orion of the New Gods, sent to Earth by Highfather to deal with the problem that is (allegedly) Superman. Orion shows up towards the end of the book, but the really fun stuff comes […]

Vibe #3 review

‘His greatest challenge …’ is Kid Flash, super-speedy Teen Titan and exile from the 31st century. Argus boss Amanda Waller sends Vibe after him on the pretext that Bart Allen is a bad guy: ‘We suspect this thief and arsonist may be a breacher,’ says Waller’s field chief, Dale Gunn. Gunn knows for a fact […]

Retro review – Adventure Comics #401 review

OK, it’s not the most contemporary issue, but Adventure Comics #401 was published around the time I began reading American comics, as we British kids called any Marvel or DC books back then. This one I never bought at the time, for 5p; I purchased it today at an Edinburgh comic book show, for £3 […]

Legion of Super-Heroes #19 review

The Fatal Five’s attacks on the United Planets continue with the Emerald Empress devastating Weber’s World, the organisation’s admin HQ. Perched on the deadly Emerald Eye of Ekron like a witch on a broomstick, she’s murdering by the dozen. Can Mon-El, one of the most powerful Legionnaires, withstand her fury? Across space, Phantom Girl, Invisible […]

Red Hood and the Outlaws #19 review

Red Hood has gone missing and it’s up to Arsenal and Starfire to find him. But can they reach the mystical realm of the All Caste with the mysterious Essence out to stop them? Oh, that was fun, I’ve always wanted to write DC solicitations copy. But I also like writing reviews. And this issue […]

Supergirl #19 review

After last month’s unexplained absence, regular Supergirl writer Mike Johnson is back and doesn’t miss a beat, picking up from Frank Hannah’s issue. That ended with Kara, poisoned by green Kryptonite during the H’el conflict, being carted off by the US military after a tussle with a villainous lava lass. As we rejoin Supergirl, she’s […]

Batgirl #19 review

Batgirl’s entry for DC’s month of surprising gatefold covers suggests she may have to murder pesky brother James Gordon Jr. He’s the guy who’s been sniffing around Gotham hatching lunatic plans to terrorise his father, mother and sister. Without revealing who he was, he even took Barbara’s roommate Alysia out on a date, and gifted […]

Superboy #19 review

The best superhero origins can be expressed in a sentence. Superman – rocketed to Earth from the exploding planet Krypton. Spider-Man – teenager bitten by a radioactive spider gains amazing powers. Superboy – clone created from the genetic material of the present day Superman, Lois Lane and an unknown donor by a time travelling madman […]

Batman and Red Robin #19 review

This issue features the biggest surprise so far in DC’s month of surprising gatefold covers, so pop off now if you don’t want to be spoiled. Still here? Then read on … The main thrust of this issue sees Batman, in the wake of Damian Wayne’s murder, in barking mad mode. Yes, he’s in a […]
