Legion of Super-Heroes/Bugs Bunny Special #1 review

It’s the 31st century and Supergirl is dying of Rigel fever. Her boyfriend Brainiac 5 and fellow Legionnaires feel helpless. If only there were a deus ex machina floating around… And so, Brainy sends cute helper robot Computo 2 – descendant of the killer machine that murdered one of Triplicate Girl’s bodies, bless – back to […]

Batman ’66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes Chapter 1 review

Atomic batteries to power. Flight rings to speed’. And that title perfectly knits together the worlds of Batman ’66 and the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Caped Crusaders and the 30th century’s greatest super-teens come together to tackle two of their most dastardly villains… … OK, so one of them is Egghead, but he has his fans. […]

Retro Review – JLA: Welcome to the Working Week

After Grant Morrison and Howard Porter’s back to basics JLA exploded in popularity, DC understandably rushed out the mini-series and specials. This one I remember being announced, but as its main selling-point seemed to be that it was written by someone who worked on blah sitcom The King of Queens, I never bothered picking it […]

Wonder Woman: Steve Trevor Special #1 review

It’s just another day for Steve Trevor. A spot of monster fighting… … a night out with his best girl… … and a business trip. Of course, Steve Trevor being the number one Above Average action man of the DC Universe, things are going to get a little odd. Happily, he knows three rather odd […]

Superman #24 review

Some time ago, in space, an extraterrestrial war is in progress. Can one man make a difference? When it’s the massively powerful telepath Manchester Black, certainly. In the present day, the alien refugees of Hamilton County argue among themselves. Clark, meanwhile, visits injured wife Lois in hospital, but she’d rather he were elsewhere. Superman finds […]

Nightwing #21 review

Does a look at a book that came out a fortnight ago count as a Retro Review? I only got around to reading this issue last night, and simply have to pour on the praise. It’s a one-off team-up between Titans buddies Dick Grayson and Wally West, just catching up as they enjoy the Blüdhaven […]

Retro Review: Wonder Woman #246 (1978)

It’s 1978 and Diana Prince is battling an especially stubborn foe – stains. And while she’s not on superheroine duty, Diana does have her trusty tool handy. Then, her quiet evening takes a turn towards adventure, as a blackout traps a pair of neighbours in the elevator, forcing Diana to rescue them in costume. Or […]

Retro Review: Action Comics #415 (August 1972)

One day in Metropolis, TV newsman Clark Kent gets an unexpected visitor. Behold the crack reporter, nothing gets past Clark. The strange visitor lunges at the mild-mannered newsman and rips open his shirt, revealing the famed chest-symbol of Superman. Luckily, Clark is alone in his office, meaning his secret is safe… and he can fight […]

Teen Titans Special #1 review

Damian Wayne’s USP is that he’s a bit of a dick – highly intelligent, but even more arrogant. I’ve defended him down the years as a wild card who can turn a story on its head, disrupting normally smooth-running relationships, injecting extra excitement. This issue, though, he does something unforgivable. Let’s work our way to […]

Justice League of America #7 review

It’s a downtime day for Batman’s Justice League of America. The Caped Crusader is at headquarters checking out the work of weapons maker turned Secret Sanctuary fixer-upper Xenos. In Manhattan’s Museum of Unnatural History, the Atom, Ryan Choi and Killer Frost, Caitlin Snow, have a lead on a cure for the latter’s need to snatch […]
