One of the newer shows at the Fire and Water Network is DC SpecialCast, which sees host Paul Kien and a guest chat about one of the comics which came under the Bronze Age DC Special Series banner, which was used for giants, digests, dollar comics and treasury editions.
Separate from that listing was the comic series actually called DC Special, an anthology whose best-known issue gave us the origin of the JSA. Only the final three were all-new stories, the preceding issues featured focuses on such artistic greats as Joe Kubert and Carmine Infantino and themed reprint stories.
Then there’s the like of DC Super-Stars, best remembered for a potty Superheroes vs Supervillains baseball tale reviving the Strange Sports Stories title… basically, any irregular or one-off could show up on the podcast.
Asked to appear on the show, I plumped for a favourite comic from my teenhood, Danger: Dinosaurs at Large! Written by Bob Rozakis and drawn by Rich Buckler and Joe Rubinstein, it had Captain Comet and Tommy Tomorrow facing ‘the incredible dinosaur invasion of 1977’. The good Captain – recently seen in Action Comics – back then was a regular in the Secret Society of Super-Villains series, and it was a great surprise to see him get top billing in a giant special. OK, it was top billing over Tommy Tomorrow…
… mind, Tommy was no slouch, holding his own series from 1947-1963, knocking Comet’s 1951-1954 spotlight into a cocked space helmet.
Danger: Dinosaurs at Large! has Tommy face dinosaurs in the past while Comet defends the Earth from an evolved dinosaur man and his scaly friends in the present day.

It’s a fun time which gave Paul and me plenty to talk about. Join us by downloading DC SpecialCast #11 from your preferred podcatcher or simply clicking this link and tapping the wee arrow.

Comments welcome there, or here, heck, both if you’re feeling very kind.
And if you don’t have the comic, but do have a subscription to DC Infinite, DC Special is right there. Enjoy!
Great issue and great job, Martin!!!!! I enjoyed the discussion and will check out more of that podcast. – Brian
