Black Lightning #2 review

In Metropolis, Black Lightning and daughter (Not Black) Lightning are fighting a monster. In the Justice League Watchtower Thunder, Jefferson’s other girl, is fighting her demons. The therapist seems rather good, and when Thunder – Annisa Pierce – loses control of her powers, as she’s been doing since the Absolute Power debacle, the counsellor proves […]

Action Comics #1079 review

How often do you read a superhero comic and find the hero facing the biggest of threats but failing to call in help. Not so here, as not only do the resident members of the Super Family step up when the Phantom Zone prisoners escape into our solar system, but the Justice League are on […]

Superwoman Special #1 review

We’ve waited a couple of months, but here we learn just how Lois Lane gained super-powers and, as everyone thought, it’s all connected to the Absolute Power storyline. Lois, wanting to help her husband, son and the rest of the hero community, donned a Luthor super-suit and headed for Gamorra, where Amanda Waller was running […]

JSA #2 review

Ah, who doesn’t like a homage to All-Star Squadron #1, promising an issue in which the leaders of a Justice Society team picks the latest line-up. Well, it’s a promise that remains unfulfilled here, as there’s nothing remotely resembling such a moment. What we get is the resolution of last issue’s cliffhanger. But not straight […]

Action Comics #1078 review

Jon Kent is facing one of his father’s old foes, Grax. The alien conqueror is crowing, knowing that the Sun is being drained to fuel the creation of mass in the Phantom Zone. That plot was the work of Aethyr, a crazed godlike being who, nevertheless, has just been defeated by Superman. The Man of […]

Batman – Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #1 review

Santa Claus is coming to town, and that town is Gotham. Again. Last year writer Jeff Parker and a team of artists, led by Michele Bandini, brought us a terrific team-up between Father Christmas and the Justice League. And here’s the sequel, with Lucas Ketner replacing a busy-in-Santa’s-workshop Bandini. Happily, the visual quality remains high, […]

Action Comics #1077 review

Superman has escaped from doomed Krypton and is back in the Phantom Zone in the present day. The mad god Aethyr has been altering the reality of the ghostly realm, creating mass and giving its ethereal inhabitants physical form. Superman comes across old friend Mon-El seemingly saying a prayer. Bringing the Man of Steel up […]

Justice League Unlimited #1 review

It’s a brand new day for the heroes of the DC Universe, as the Justice League becomes the umbrella organisation under which all heroes are invited to operate, as Flash tells first-timer Air Wave. The missions doled out by Red Tornado in this debut issue include an attack by War Wheels in South Africa… … […]

Batman & Robin Year One #2 review

When I was a kid in the Seventies, Mad Magazine had a feature, Scenes We’d Like To Seen, in which tired tropes of popular culture would be subverted. The second issue of DC’s latest Batman mini-series has something of that ilk. They’re a cynical bunch, but I believe this is how the good folk of […]

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1 review

Who watches the supermen? Renee Montoya, the cop turned Question. Life in Gotham City having gone to hell (again!), she’s accepted Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman’s offer to be marshal of the new Justice League Watchtower, hangout for every one of Earth’s heroes. She certainly looks the part. There’s a specific mission attached to the […]
